A Study on Family Support Services for Adults with Developmental Disabilities

Abstract

|
The purpose of this study is to improve support system based on service experiences of families of adults with developmental disabilities. Total of 375 survey data were statistically analyzed and major results are as followings: First, the families had most participated in financial support, and educational, social, emotional, medical and health care supports were followed. The most satisfied service was psychological service and the least was medical and health care service. They also need financial support most, and social, medical and health care, educational, and psychological services in order. To improve family support system, it is necessary to expand service facilities and personnel, provide need-based quality services, and extend service time. Second, there were statistically significant differences in service satisfaction between gross income, residence area, family structure, and number of family members. Third, the necessity of services showed statistically significant differences in family structure, educational level, residence area and gross income. In conclusion, it is necessary to provide family support services considering service accessibility, age-appropriate program, financial support after parents¡¯ death, psychological counseling for siblings without disabilities, disability education for grandparents, and extension of service providers and of need-based services.
